Alaska

Guide Services

  • The Ascending Path
    Find the best snow and terrain with a local Alaska guide. Guests range from beginners with in-bounds experience to 40-year veterans. On multi-day tours The Ascending Path will lead you far from the roadside crowds and into the untracked backcountry.

Huts

  • Alaska Alpine Club
    The Alaska Alpine Club maintains three huts in the Delta Range. They are available on a first come first serve basis and the doors are unlocked.
  • Mountaineering Club of Alaska
    MCA owns and maintains eight backcountry huts in the Chugach and Talkeetna Mountains. These rustic huts sleep 8-10 and are located above the treeline near glaciers.

California

  • 10th Mountain Division Hut System
    10th Mountain manages a system of 29 backcountry huts in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, connected by 350 miles of suggested routes.
  • Red Mountain Pass Ski Huts
    Ski hut rentals located on Red Mountain Pass in Southwestern Colorado. Enjoy backcountry skiing in the San Juan Mountains.

  • Aerial Boundaries
    Based in Driggs, Aerial Boundaries provides custom adventures worldwide, in climbing, ski mountaineering, canyoneering, and trekking.
  • Idaho Parks and Recreation
    The State of Idaho maintains five fabulous backcountry yurts in the Idaho City Area Yurts and Trail system, about an hour from Boise. At the yurts you can hike, mountain bike, Nordic, telemark ski, snowshoe or horseback ride depending on the season.
  • Jughandle Hut
    The Jughandle Hut is a backcountry ski hut located on the shoulder of massive Jughandle Mountain on Idaho State land near McCall.
  • Payette Lakes Alpine Yurts
    P.L.A.Y. maintains two huts northeast of McCall, ID. Both huts offer cross country touring from gentle to more challenging terrain for telemark and alpine touring. PLAY offers guided half-day to multi-day cross country ski and snowshoe tours. All tours can be tailored to the specific needs and desires of your group.
  • Payette Powder Guides
    Offering yurt rentals, guide services, backcountry skiing and avalanche courses, as well as over the snow transport with state of the art snowmobiles and/or the biodiesel fueled snowcat. Located in the heart of Idaho’s West Central Mountains, PPG has over 30,000 acres of untracked powder, two yurts located on Lick Creek Summit and miles of skiing just outside the door.
  • Sawtooth Mountain Guides
    Sawtooth Mountain Guides is the premiere year-round mountain guide service for the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. SMG is headquartered at the base of the Sawtooth Wilderness from the mountain village of Stanley, Idaho, just 60 miles from Sun Valley. In the winter SMG provides yurt rentals, backcountry ski guiding and avalanche education.

  • Mazama Lodge
    Mazama Lodge, located on the southern slopes of Mt. Hood, is an excellent destination throughout the year. The Lodge is open year-round and provides access to cross-country and downhill skiing, and mountaineering. The Lodge is owned and operated by the Mazamas, a Portland-based mountaineering organization established in 1894 on the summit of Mt. Hood. The Lodge is open to Mazamas and their guests as well as other outdoor and conservation organizations. Additionally, other non-profit organizations such as churches, schools, and youth and civic groups may use the Lodge by special arrangement.

Utah

  • All Seasons Adventures
    If you are looking to escape the bustle of skiers, traffic and the city for a few hours, join All Season Adventures on a backcountry cross country ski tour in Park City or on the outskirts of town. This is your opportunity to travel the same way the mountain men and early miners used to, on a pair of cross-country skis. On each tour they will introduce you to different parts of the Uinta National Forest and other gorgeous wildlife areas surrounding Park City.

  • Bear River Outdoor Recreation Alliance
    BRORA is a non-profit corporation whose purpose is to assist and cooperate with local, state and federal governments in promoting, developing and maintaining outdoor recreation within the city of Evanston Wyoming, Uinta County, and the north slope of the Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Five yurts have been erected and are maintained in a cooperative venture between the Forest Service and BRORA. The Yurts are available for rent.
  • Powder Ridge Ski Touring Yurt Rentals
    Powder Ridge Ski Touring operates two 16 foot yurts, Bunchgrass and Steam Mill. They are named for the drainages they are located in, which has some fine northern Utah backcountry skiing.

Washington

 Huts

  • Mount Tahoma Trails Association
    North America's largest No Fee Hut-to-Hut Trail System. Approximately 50 miles of trails, 20 miles groomed, three huts, and a yurt. Operated and managed by a non-profit association in cooperation with their host landowners.
  • The Mountaineers
    The Mountaineers host five year-round getaway and activity centers for Mountaineers and their guests: Mt. Baker, Meany, Snoqualmie and Stevens Lodges, as well as Kitsap Cabin.

Wyoming

 Guide Services/Yurts

  • Bear River Outdoor Recreation Alliance

  • Exum Mountain Guides
    One of the top professional climbing guide services in the USA, Exum Mountain Guides has provided mountain adventures for beginning, intermediate and advanced climbers since 1926. In the winter Exum offers avalanche courses, guided backcountry skiing, peak ascents and ski mountaineering adventures. Exum is the only guide service permitted by the National Park Service to guide all peaks and routes in the Teton Range year round.
  • Rendezvous Backcountry Tours
    Rendevous Backcountry Tours offers day tours on Teton Pass or along the base of the Tetons near Jackson Hole or Grand Targhee Resorts. If you have more time, reserve an overnight tour at one of our four backcountry huts located on the western slope of the Tetons. Our huts provide access to the Jedediah Smith Wilderness Area and Grand Teton National Park, where over 500 inches of legendary light, dry powder snow falls each winter. With a variety of terrain from steep mountain ridges to broad, low-angled powder bowls, this area is home to some of the best, most-accessible backcountry skiing and riding in the lower 48.
  • Thomas Turiano
    Guiding skiing and mountaineering in Greater Yellowstone for over 20 years has allowed Tom to share his passion for the mountains with thousands of people who might not otherwise have had a safe and comfortable opportunity. Tom provides his guests with safe and fun mountaineering adventures in Greater Yellowstone year-round. Tom guides in the Tetons, Wind Rivers, Beartooths, Devils Tower, and City of Rocks.

    Skinny Skis has been just off the square in downtown Jackson for over 35 years, serving the locals and visitors with specialized and friendly hometown service. Born out of a passion for Nordic skiing, Skinny Skis has evolved from a very small cross country ski shop to a nearly half-block long specialty outdoor store. In the summers, the store offers all the latest equipment for running, training, hiking, roller skiing, mountaineering and climbing. The winters are consumed with cross country and backcountry skiing.
